Routine. Some of us think about routine and automatically get a feeling of monotony. Some of us get pleasure from making a routine and some would rather stay as far away from routine as humanly possible.
However what about those of us that have a hard time making a routine and we desperately need one to keep us on track?

From what I’ve learned in my own life, routine is a highly sought after necessity if you want to accomplish anything. Often in my own life, I’ve found it hard to cultivate this aspect, especially since I am a highly creative individual. (It can get messy if I don’t find some semblance of normalcy.) I’ve learned that in order for me to thrive and accomplish my goals in a timely and successful manner, sometimes it takes a little bit more effort to get on the right track.
This is where a simple morning routine can come in. Even if it sometimes seems annoying for those of us that are a bit more chaotic in nature!
Deadlines, schedules, and meeting agendas, oh my!
Some people think these are the bread-and-butter of “getting things done”. However, the simple morning task of preparing myself gets me started for all of those aforementioned goals. Sometimes I think the morning routine gets overlooked as a vital part of our day and as a lesser stage of productivity.
We live in a fast-paced society with our coffee in hand and phones alerting us to of our next activities. It can seem like a waste of time to spend your morning focusing on where you might be going with your day. It’s understandable that perhaps we’ve lost the art of preparing ourselves for what’s to come.
I found that if I start my day with a very simple morning routine that centers me, I can actually accomplish a lot more with the rest of my day. It’s like charging up your own personal daily batteries with a small amount of upkeep to remember exactly where you are at the start of your day.
What’s even more important is that if you are on any kind of spiritual growth, inner growth, or healing path – you’ll want to take this specific time at the start of your day to care for yourself. With the daily hustle and bustle it’s difficult to grow if we don’t pay attention to ourselves, even if it’s the start of the day.
Here’s some of the activities I do when I start my own morning routine:
- Self-care
- Looking over my tasks for the day
- Journaling/Dream Journaling
- Meditation
- Pull an Oracle card or Tarot card for inspiration
- Sketch
- Have a smoothie
- Stretch
- Exercise for at least 15 Minutes
- Breathing Techniques
- Go for a walk
- Have a cup of tea or coffee and relax
- Make a list of things to do
- Listen to some uplifting music
- Drink water
These simple efforts can empower you at the start of your day so you can be in that awesome state of productive flow before you even get started with the larger tasks. Doing only two of these tasks at the start of my day has helped me immensely. If I accomplish four of them I’ll have a lot of positive vibes stirring around that contribute.
But what about some of the things that I avoid first thing in the morning?
These block my morning flow:
- Using my phone right away
- Checking on social media
- Jumping out of bed quickly and getting dressed
- Chatting too long
- Taking phone calls before I’m ready
- Going over daunting long term goals
- Spending too much time ruminating on the day
- Not taking care of myself
Do any of these resonate with you?
Sometimes it feels like the morning routine has become a lost art in our super charged world, but in reality I think that if you’re aiming to be a productive person, you’ll find yourself performing at least three of these activities when you start your day. My hat’s off to you if you made it work! Here’s to hoping that some of us can find a routine that charges us!
